“LIV vibrations increased cartilage building blocks by 93.6% – detailed analysis of the mechanism” Archives of Oral Biology, 2020
WHY THIS MATTERS
While LIV’s impact on bone building is well-documented, research on cartilage regeneration has been less extensive and detailed. Cartilage virtually never renews itself naturally, so any effective method of regeneration has enormous significance for intervertebral discs, joints, and all cartilaginous structures of the spine.
RESEARCH DISCUSSION
This study provides the most comprehensive analysis of LIV’s mechanism on chondrogenesis:
Previous studies already showed that LIV increases cartilage thickness, but Hou et al. detailed the process at the cellular level. Stem cells subjected to LIV vibration (0.49g, 40Hz) increased glycosaminoglycan production by 56.5% after one week and 93.6% after two weeks. Simultaneously, chondrogenesis markers increased: Aggrecan by 5.37-fold, Sox9 by 4.32-fold, BMP7 significantly from day one.
Crucially: cartilage degradation markers (Collagen X) were reduced, meaning not only building new cartilage but also protecting existing cartilage.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
The study precisely explained the mechanism: LIV activates chondrogenesis through nuclear translocation of β-catenin and cytoskeleton reorganization. This directs stem cells toward cartilage formation instead of fat tissue – an effect similar to the known impact on bones.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS
Benefits extend beyond bone building:
- Intervertebral disc regeneration
- Protection of spinal joints from wear
- Reduction of cartilage-degrading enzyme expression (MMP-13)
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
Particularly valuable for people with disc degeneration, spinal joint arthritis, or general spinal “wear and tear.” LIV is safe according to ISO and OSHA standards – just 10-20 minutes daily suffices. Unlike pain medications that only mask symptoms, LIV actually regenerates damaged tissue.
